– How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?
Don’t ask, but this came on - thanks to shuffle - when I was on the tube this morning.

In 14 days...
…facebook will have forgotten about me.
I’ve been threatening to delete my facebook account for a long time and now I’ve done it. There’s a 14 day grace period before it’s permanent and if I log in in the that time it’ll be re-activated. However, once it’s gone, it’s really gone.
Why have I done it?
I think that it’s a glorious waste of time...

Hands
I’ve been conscious lately of the intimacy represented in hand to hand contact.
I noticed it first a few weeks ago when I was having a massage. Not as salubrious as it might sound, I promise, but there was a point when I was having my arms massaged and the masseuse - as part of the massage - slide her palm across mine. It felt strange but very nice. In a small part of my irrational mind I...

Stellarium
I must recommend this piece of software.
It’s well past my bedtime and I couldn’t sleep so I got up and spent some time looking out of the window. Whilst there’s quite a lot of light pollution here thanks to Stellarium I was able to find out what I was looking at.
I started with some lovely, low and bright stars like Rigil Kent, Mimosa and Acrux. Parts of the Centaurus and Crux...

Naïvety
We were out at a bar last Friday and I noticed that we were stood next to some western girls. Not a big deal in itself but given that you don’t see any western girls it was a little strange.
So being polite, I introduced myself to one of them and asked where they were from. She struggled to understand my accent and eventually I found out her name and that she and her friends were from...
Shared Workspace
I’ve not posted for a while. I know there are about 3 people who read this but I also write it for posterity.
Anyway, I’ve been reading an interesting book (interesting to me at least) lately called “The Psychology of Computer Programming” and it has been making some great observations and offering some brilliant advice.
In particular it was discussing the benefit of...

Airports: an agitated study
It’s really early and I’ve not been to bed (trying to get my body clock in sync) so I’m a little bit irritable. It seems that airports really exaggerate some kinds of behaviour. Here are some thoughts.
Any large group of people travelling together invariably includes young children, the elderly or possibly both. Avoid these people. They should be made to have a special check in...
Hooked on a sound
I’m having one of those periods where I’m slightly addicted to a piece of music. I don’t know why, I think I just really like the chord progressions, sounds and mood of the song.
The track has a soothingly slow meter and is played on electric guitar, hammond organ, bass with a little percussion. The lyrics are admittedly sombre with images of rain falling and seeping into shoes.
Seeing the Unseen...
I listened to a great lecture given by Maurice Perks - a Fellow at IBM - on the sins of IT projects. One of his points got me thinking. He was talking about the difficulty of simply knowing where you are with an IT project. That is, knowing how much is done, what is done and how much is left to do. With software projects this is typically very hard and he cited examples of when projects suddenly...
jamiejones:
We were traveling back at about 8:30 on Saturday after our trek and a meal out in Dehradun. This is us walking to get the bus. Just a taster of the craziness.
Honk if you love craziness.

– very roughly quoted from C.S.Lewis via my friend Ben. Will find the real quote some time but I can relate to this quite a lot at the moment.
