Last Saturday I spent the afternoon making a simple electronic instrument at the chiptune marching band workshop at Space in Hackney. When I say simple I mean, on and off switch and a knob for pitch control. Since I was really engrossed in meddling around with my creation, I took no photos. Finally they’ve posted a few on flickr. This is my photo for the band members page.
I was lucky enough to be sat next to Matthew C. Applegate (aka Pixelh8) the chip tune musician. That said, he was humble to admit that he had a basic understanding of electronics and that his skills lay in programming. He brought along some of his gear and was kind enough to show us.
After an hour of so of building, soldering, glueing and taping, we took to the streets. Like a cold swimming pool it was better to dive right in than do it half-heartedly. So we make a load of noise, chatted to the people who didn’t think we were strange and scared everyone else.
I’ve been noodling about with my “instrument” since and might get round to posting some more about it.
